Movies to Watch Out For in 2017

First and foremost, a disclaimer: We’re not going to include the obvious blockbusters in this list (like Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, Star Wars Episode VIII, Justice League, Wonder Woman, Spiderman: Homecoming etc.) because everyone knows you should definitely watch those films. Instead, we are going to feature films that are a little bit under the radar.

Get Out

This upcoming horror film is written and directed by no other than Jordan Peele. Yes, you heard that right, that guy from Comedy Central’s Key and Peele. The plot revolves around an African-American guy’s visit to his Caucasian girlfriend’s family estate where he finds out the real horrible truth and history of the lot. It touches on several social issues relevant today like racism, classism, and white privilege, so it’s not just your average run-of-the-mill jump scare movie.

Gifted is the latest film from (500) Days of Summer and The Amazing Spiderman director Marc Webb. It’s about Frank Adler (Chris Evans) raising his late sister’s seven-year-old daughter Mary. His plans for her to have a normal childhood and school life are foiled when Mary’s advanced mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s mother. Maybe we’ll finally see Captain America’s true acting prowess in this drama film.

All Eyez On Me

After the blockbuster success of 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, music bio pics keep popping out but the one every hip hop fan’s looking forward to is All Eyez On Me, the same title of Tupac’s fourth studio album. The film will focus on the life and career of Tupac Shakur, including his involvement at Death Row Records (the record company founded by notably Dr. Dre and Suge Knight) that ensued to the East and West Coast rivalry which pushed to his untimely fatal murder in 1996. The film will be released on what would’ve been the MC’s birthday, June 16, 2017.

The Lego Ninjago Movie

2 Lego movies in one year? What did we do to deserve this blessing? The Lego Ninjago Movie is set to come out on September 22, 2017. It stars a great line-up of comedians like Dave Franco, Deadpool’s Michael Pena, Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani and Zach Woods, Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson, and legend Jackie Chan. It’s about six young ninjas tasked to defend their island home of Ninjago against villains and monsters. But by day, they’re up against an even tougher enemy – high school.
