Original Netflix Shows to Watch on Christmas Break

If you’ve got nothing to do while on Christmas break, it would be a good time to start watching some original Netflix shows. You never know, you might just find your new favourite!

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Kimmy Schmidt which was created by 30 Rock star Tina Fey and Robert Carlock was originally set for a 13-episode first season for NBC, but the show was eventually sold to Netflix and was given a 2nd season. It follows 29-year-old Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) as she adapts to her new life in New York City after she, together with three other women were rescued from a doomsday cult where they were kept for 15 years. The show has received nothing but critical acclaim since its inception with some even calling it as “the first great sitcom of the streaming era.” The show has been nominated for 11 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

Stranger Things

If you haven’t ridden the Stranger Things hype train yet, it’s not too late! You can even finish this on a day or two because there’s only 8 episodes so far. If you’re a big fan of the 80s, you’ll surely enjoy this scifi horror mystery from the Duffer Brothers. It’s got an amazing ensemble cast (which compromises mostly of kids), an awesome and eerie synth-ridden soundtrack, and a great story that’ll have you at the edge of your seat.

BoJack Horseman

BoJack Horseman is an adult animated comedy-drama series that stars Arrested Development star Will Arnett, Community’s Alison Brie and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul. The show takes place mostly in Los Angeles, specifically Hollywood. BoJack is a washed-up star of a 90s sitcom in a world where humans and anthropomorphic animals live side by side. The show satirizes the film industry and celebrity culture aka Hollywood in general. How would we describe this show? Funny yet heartbreaking. It’s renewed for a fourth season which is scheduled to premiere summer 2017.

Master of None

This show bagged an Emmy win for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and for a good reason.  It stars Parks and Recreation alum Aziz Ansari. He plays Dev Shah, a commercial actor attempting to make his way through life in New York City. The first season only consists of 10 episodes, but the season 2 is scheduled to premiere in 2017. The show is also included in a number of “Top 10 best TV shows of 2015” articles, including ones from TIME, Vanity Fair, Vogue, The Washington Post, and many more.
