Pinoy Pop: A Look into the Evolution of Fantaseryes

Since when have we become engrossed in local TV productions that fall into the Fantaserye and Telefantasya category? This peek into the genre and its growth on the small screen should hold the answer!

About Fantaserye and Telefantasya

As what their names imply, Fantaseryes and Telefantasyas are simply fantasy-based series. Fantaserye was coined by ABS-CBN, while Telefantasya was by rival GMA. This genre in Philippine TV mixes soap opera or telenovela conventions with myth and magic.

The Humble Beginning

Although the terms may sound recent, fantasy-based series in Philippine TV was spearheaded by a TAPE, Inc. production in 1987. Okey Ka, Fairy Ko follows THE taga-lupa Enteng Kabisote’s extraordinary day-to-day life, married to a fairy and regularly criticized by a stern fairy mother-in-law. It was a hit during its time that it aired for seven years.

ABS-CBN’s Wansapanataym, which started airing in 1997 and still airs today, is also one of the earliest fantaseryes in the small screen.

When Fantaseryes and Telefantasyas Soared

2004 was a big year for the genre. On one hand, ABS-CBN had Marina which told of a woman cursed into being a mermaid. On the other, GMA had Mulawin which introduced the half-human, half-bird race into the Filipino sala and primetime viewing. Both shows did great in the ratings game that both TV networks, as well as TV 5, filled their day time and primetime line up with fantasy-based shows.
